The law firm of Weinstein, Chase, Messinger and Peters, P.C. , originated in 1955 as Weinstein & Chayt, P. C., with an office in Brooklyn, New York. Since 1958, the principal office of the firm has been located at 26 Court Street, Brooklyn, New York. The firm is among the oldest continuous law firms in Brooklyn. The principal area of practice is civil litigation, mainly torts (personal injury and medical malpractice) and insurance. As a result of our specialization in this area we often act as counsel to other attorneys regarding matters of this type. For more than 20 years, the firm has been particularly well known in the field of medical malpractice. We have also done extensive defense work for private litigants, particularly those who have been sued and have no insurance.

The firm has a well-established and excellent reputation with our adversaries and in the courts. We fight hard but with fairness and integrity. Our practice is not limited to Kings County (Brooklyn), but the firm is undoubtedly best known in this County. We have many cases throughout the five boroughs of New York City and also in Nassau, Suffolk and Westchester.

Along with our focus area of civil litigation and trials, the firm devotes a substantial portion of its practice to the areas of real estate, wills, trusts and estates as well as general commercial matters such as the incorporation, purchase and sale of businesses.

Murray Weinstein is a former member of the State Legislature, succeeded there by his daughter, Assemblywoman Helene Weinstein, currently Chair of the Judiciary Committee. Ms. Weinstein is of counsel to the firm.

Maurice Chayt has been an active bar association leader. In 1981, he was President of the Brooklyn Bar Association. He later served as President of the Network of Bar Leaders, an association then consisting of 25 of the leading bar associations in the New York City metropolitan area, and as a Delegate of the New York State Bar Association. He has written articles in the New York State Bar Journal and in the Brooklyn Bar Association Bulletin, and currently serves as one of the firm's leading trial attorneys. Maurice Chayt is currently a member of the Grievance Committee and is also of counsel to the firm.
